Characteristics
Within the corundum mineral family, ruby is widely known for its intense hardness. It is the third-hardest mineral, after diamond and moissanite, ranked 9 on Mohs Hardness Scale. Its extreme hardness and chemical stability, make it an excellent abrasive for industrial use such as in industrial bearings, scratch-resistant windows for electronic instruments, wafers for circuit boards, and many other applications.
The trace element which causes the color red in this gemstone is chromium which varies amongst gemstones even if they are mined from the same source. The most desirable color in ruby is the so-called “Pigeon’s Blood” which is pure red with a hint of blue. As a rough stone, ruby appears dull and greasy, but after being cut, the gemstone’s luster can approach that of a diamond. Heat treatment tends to be carried out in order to improve the color and transparency of the gemstone.
Occurrence & Mining
Countries such as Burma, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, India, and Afghanistan traditionally source rubies while in the past decade parts of Africa such as Madagascar, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Malawi, have become important producers of this gemstone. In fact, one of the finest quality rubies has the GIA documentation of Myanmar (Burmese) origin.
